StayWell to open hotel in Bali Island

New Exotic Babies in Bali Zoo

With the birth of new exotic babies in the Bali Zoo, it is expected that more and more people and tourists will come to visit Bali and book the many villas Bali and villas in Bali for rent.


According to an official of the Bali Zoo, three new additions have been welcomed here in the past two months alone. Among these is the endangered Bali starling chick which hatched last November 21 and is only the third captive-born Bali starling in the zoo.


The silver gibbon, which was born on November 17, and the dusky wallaby, which was born on October 16, have all been born to animals that have been kept in the zoo, said Emma Kristiana Chandra, public relations executive of the zoo. Right now, the hatchlings have been placed in an incubator by the veterinarians of the zoo to provide them a controlled climate.


The dusky wallaby is the 9th marsupial in the Bali Zoo.


With the birth of these animals, there are now about 60 individual animals in the Bali Zoo.


The Bali Zoo is also successful with its tiger breeding program which has already produced 15 tigers since 2007. In June alone, three female Bengal tiger cubs were born in the zoo.

Premier Inn Opens in Bali Jimbaran in 2013

The Premier Inn Bali Jimbaran is soon to open in Bali. Premier Inn is UK’s largest hotel brand that has more than 650 hotels that make up its over 40,500 rooms worldwide. It was originally called “Travel Inn” in 1987.


Now, as it joins forces with PT Alda Bali Indotel, an Indonesian company, it will establish its first property in Indonesia.


Ali Kusno Fusin, the Director of Alda Bali Indotel, said the Premier Inn will be opening next year, sometime in the second half of the year. This was according to the report of Bisnis.com.


“In keeping with the development of tourism, particularly the demands of budget travelers seeking ‘value for money,’ the opening of the Premier Inn is the right move,” added Fusin.


On the side of Premier Inn, this is going to be their first step towards introducing their brand to Indonesia and to the rest of Southeast Asia. In fact, right now, the company is seeking some business partners in the Southeast Asian region. This is according to the statement of Erik van Keulen, the Senior Vice President for Development in the Asia Pacific for Premier Inn.

Bali Coffee Exports Increase

Good news for the coffee industry of Bali as its coffee exports have risen by 80.93 percent in January to September 2012 alone. All in all, it has reached US$152,601 according to the Public Relations Chief of Bali Administration 1, Ketut Teneng.

Bali Mount Batur set to be main tourist destination

Mount Batur, one of the extremely active volcanoes in Indonesia located in Kintamani, will now become a major tourist destination after it was inscribed to the Global Geoparks Network (GNN) by UNESCO just last September 20. The Global Geoparks Network certificate for Mt. Batur was given during the 11th annual GNN meeting held in Arouca Geopark located in Portugal. This makes Mt. Batur the 89th member of the 90 GNN members all over the world.

Both the central and provincial governments have agreed to join their efforts in promoting Mount Btur.

There will be three main targets that the government will take note of, said Mari Elka Pangestu, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister. These are the implementation of conservation, education and income-generating efforts through developing community-based and ecotourism.

“Mt. Batur area could be designated as a destination for historical and cultural tourism, as well as medical and wellness tourism. It has a unique history and culture that could attract tourists. The area also has natural hot springs that are yet to be developed. We can combine natural resources with traditional medicines. That would be great,” Mari added.

The regency of Karangasem in Bali became a recipient of 300 Japanese “Sakura” cherry blossom trees from The Japan Sakura Exchange Association. Such cherry blossom trees will be planted in Rendang Village. It was presented to the regent of Karangasem, I Wayan Geredeg, by Mori Kazusika, chairman of The Japan Sakura Exchange Association.

In order to ensure that the cherry blossom trees will survive and thrive in Rendang Village, Japanese horticulturists made some modification to the trees to suit the soil and climatic conditions of the said place.

Coming from the genus Prunus Serrulata, commonly known as the Sakura, it will make a rich floral display of pink flowers that look more like pink clouds. Such display would last at an average of a week or more.

“The Karangasem people are grateful to receive this precious gift. I hope the relationship between Karangasem and Osaka will start on a strong footing,” said the regent.

Japanese tourist numbers in Bali gradually increasing again

They attribute the past decrease to the earthquake in Japan in 2011 and the global economic crisis.


They also pinpoint, as another factor of the decrease of Japanese tourist arrivals in Bali, the discontinuing of the direct flights from Japan to Bali. This has forced tourists to take a more expensive route to Jakarta first before heading for Bali.


According to Aswin Pranoto, Bali Hotel Public Relations Association Coordinator, he has indeed noticed a bigger number of Japanese tourists who usually stay for 3 to 4 nights in villas in Bali for rent in the Nusa Dua area.

SAMAS stay on pedaling to support bike-to-school preference

Parents and teachers in Bali are keen to understand their role in nurturing and developing the bike-to-school preference of children. This is in the midst of the fact that more and more children in Bali prefer to go to school in motorcycles.

According to a parent-teacher, Made Darwi, the lifestyles of parents contribute to the inclination of a student to use either the bike or motorcycle to school. He said this at the SMP Sunari Loka junior high school in Kuta, during the campaign initiated by the Denpasar-based association of bicycle communities (SAMAS) which was attended by some 300 first grade junior high school students.

According to Made Darwi, there are 200 out of 1,200 students who ride the bicycle to go to school. And the primary reason for this is the influence of their headmaster who is engaged in the Sunari Loka Bicycle Community.

I Gusti Ngurah Wirata, an active member of the Denpasar-based Lelasan Berseri bicycle community, says “Cycling to school is not only for health or to save the environment. As a father, I see it as a way for my children to understand that things in life do not all come in an instant. There’s a process in everything”.

According to Endra Datta, Secretary of SAMAS, it is always a challenging work to continue to promote the bike-to-school campaign among junior high school students. Presently, they are putting efforts at strengthening the campaigns that are already instilled in schools like Sunari Loka. But the work is more difficult when they have to start the campaign in new schools.

In support of their cause, safety riding guidelines are also being disseminated by the police among high school students.

Artists from three nations preparing for joint exhibit in Bali

Artists from Iran, Malaysia, and Indonesia are going to come together to Bali, Indonesia on April next year for a joint exhibition sponsored by the Malaysian-Iranian Art Society (MIAS). It is an organization built by two nations which have been known to have a rich culture since the beginning of time. It is aimed to promote the artists of these two nations through an exchange of art, performing arts, culture, music, dance, drama, poetry, sculpture, photography, and others.

There will be about 30 artists from the three countries who will be showcasing their artwork in the areas of painting, sculpture, calligraphic painting, illumination and photography. The theme for this year’s exhibition is culture and modernism.

Though no date has been announced yet, MIAS said in its website that the selected artworks will be displayed in a Kuala Lumpur gallery.

MIAS is a budding organization which was established only in 2011 by some 50 Iranian and Malaysian artists who believe in the promotion of the arts. It was in June 25 last year when the organization began its activities particularly a joint exhibition of paintings entitled, Art Connexion.

The Recent Visit to Bali of Pencils for Kids, Inc.

Education, in whatever country or continent, is deemed very important for a bright future. It is luck for those whose parents can afford to send them to school and provide for more than what they need. However, how about those who do not have enough? What about those who cannot go to school because their parents cannot afford to buy them notebooks, pencils and paper? What happens to them?

The Pencils for Kids, Inc., is an organization based in Los Angeles that aims to help school children of developing countries have access to these materials and thus go to school in order to build their future. Along with organizations and corporate sponsors who believe in the cause, it helps transform a child one at a time.

For the past five years, Retta Jitner and some volunteers from America come to Bali every July to distribute uniforms and backpacks that are filled with school materials. Bill Vogel, Executive Advisor Board of Pencils for Kids, was able to join Jitner last July 1 to the island.

On their stay in the island, they were accommodated in one of the Bali villa rentals which is The Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa. The following day, there were about 30 volunteers, coming from the hotel and from around the island, who helped stuff the backpacks with supplies from the US. The distribution was not limited to the children in the cities and major thoroughfares of the island. And when the children were reached by the group, they offered the visitors special dances and songs, as well as greetings. There were also the teachers who were as happy as the kids for the privilege and the parents greeted the volunteers as the volunteers passed.

The 13th Annual General Meeting of Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN) is coming up on October 31 to November 2, 2012. And this year, it is the Indonesian vaccine-maker, Bio Farma, that will host the affair to be held in Bali, Indonesia.

The DCVMN is an organization among the developing countries’ vaccine manufacturers which aims to protect people against infectious diseases that affect the different parts of the world, as well as increase the availability and enhance the quality of these vaccines.

According to Bio Farma President Director Iskandar, it was established in Bandung in 1999, with Indonesia as one of its founding members. It has already contributed quite a number of milestones to the development of quality vaccines.

Furthermore, it is the network’s aim for this meeting to encourage and promote research works toward meeting the need for vaccines. Aston which has entered the Southeast Asian market in the year 1997 will add to its 100 properties of resorts, hotels, and condos the 4th Aston International favehotel in Bali.

It will be located in the main transport artery of Bali, Jalan. It will be the fifteenth favehotel in Indonesia and will feature 160 rooms complete with TV sets mounted on walls, air conditioning system, Wifi connection, hotel facilities, bar, restaurant, and swimming pool. They also have an in-room massage service for those who want to be relaxed and feel rejuvenated.

“With more and more low-cost carriers offering lift into Bali and a growing Indonesian and regional middle class it makes perfect sense for us to offer several select service faves on the island. These hotels sell out often just days after they opened and are while inexpensive still up to the highest international standards and even outperform some four- and five-star hotels in areas such as beddings and Wi-Fi,” said Norbert Vas, vice president of sales and marketing of Aston International.

Favehotels have already been opened also in Umalas and Seminyak and will also open in Kuta Square, Legian, and Petitienget.

Bound Round: Travel Applications designed for children

With children not being consulted much of their opinions for traveling, a new series of travel guide apps have been created specifically for them.

This was the thought of Janeece Keller when she was on board her flight back to Sydney from London. She overheard a conversation between some children and their parents with the former complaining about the things they could do in Australia. This made her think about how to engage children in this type of activity.

Keller says that there are so many materials, books, and websites that guide parents who travel with children with what to do. However, there is barely anything for children. And since children now are growing fonder of playing with mum and dad’s smartphone or iPad, then, she thought about making the app.

Scheduled to be released in December, the first Bound Round destination guide will be released in Sydney to be followed in the Gold Coast, Canberra, Fiji, and Bali.

What’s more interesting about this app is that a board of directors has been created, composed of children, who will help in the creation of the said app.

"The idea is to take some of the pressure off parents by letting the kids discover through guides and games which are produced by local kids," said Keller.

Another feature of the app is that is can be utilized as an electronic travel journal wherein kids can share their adventures. Furthermore, there are information available on tourist destinations, opening hours of restaurants and boutiques, as well as discounts which are only made available for Bound Round customers.

Ubud Writers and Readers Festival set to inspire

Writer come together this week as the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival commences in Bali. Writers from across the globe will settle in the Bali luxury villas and private villas in Bali in this mountain area of the island of the gods.

Started by Australian writer and chef, Janet de Neefe, some nine years ago, about 140 writers who come from 30 different countries have started arriving on the island to take part in this 4-day event.

According to de Neefe, the foremost reason she started this writers and readers festival in Ubud was to turn around the impacts of the Bali bombing ten years ago and make something worthwhile for the community.

About 2,000 literature enthusiasts have been attracted to this event. And because of its wide reach, it has even included programs for children not just in Bali but across the whole Indonesia.

Those who are confirmed to attend the said event include John Pilger, an author, journalist, and filmmaker; Nick Cave, a musician, Anna Funder, a novelist, and Jose Ramos Horta, president of East Timor.

It is the fervent hope of de Neefe that such a gathering of writers will also inspire and motivate a new breed of writers who will carry on the task of making inspiring stories and accounts.

"We take some of our authors and they engage with these literary communities, like in Aceh and Sulawesi and Ambon and Papua and all sorts of places,” said de Neefe.

Marcelo Romero conducts classes for children at the said festival. He acknowledges the amazing feeling of meeting children abroad.

He said, "Its amazing how it happens that you can actually help them realize that we are all human beings, that we are all people, that we have dreams and all that."

Bali survivor inspires artist Jana Vodesil-Baruffi

When a person becomes a victim of any atrocity like the bombing in the beautiful island of Bali, he or she would naturally be feeling hopeless and confused as to what would happen next to his life. Such is what happened to Phil Britten, the bombing survivor of Bali.

But when he met with Jana Vodesil-Baruffi, an artist, he fascinated her with his ability to reinvent himself after the incident.

Vodesil-Baruffi thinks that if you become a victim of such a very horrible violence, you tend to become full of anger. For a while then, Britten was indeed confused about what to do with his life, considering all the scars he has on his body. However, after he met with his wife, Rebecca, he finally decided to do something worthwhile with the experience he had.

This realization had led to a fruitful painting with Vodesil-Baruffi with Britten exposing the scars on his back and arms, which he happens to be carrying with him for about 10 years since that fateful day, while carrying his very own son. Vodesil-Baruffi says it is something that reflects having a new life, a new start. She also added that this strength can be passed on to his son, Riley.

As to how the artist and Britten met, it was during the time when Vodesil-Baruffi met with Rebecca so she could paint her as part of her project, the Permanent Impressions, wherein she aims to paint 50 women whose contribution to WA matters.

Bali may have been the target of terrorist attacks ten years ago, but its government and people are doing everything they can to get back up from that bombing. North Bali Island No Longer Part of Sail Indonesia

A slight change has been made to the itinerary of the Sail Indonesia 2012 Yachting Regatta. This year, Pantai Lovina which is located on Bali’s northern shore in the Buleleng Regency will no longer be included in the abovementioned yachting regatta. This is primarily because the contract to include Lovina had already ended last year.

“In addition to the expiration of the contract with Love Indonesia Foundation (Yayasan Cinta Indonesia) who operate the event, we have also not received an allocation to operate Sail Indonesia from the State Budget (APBN),” said the chief of the Culture and Tourism Office for Buleleng, Jro Ketut Warkadea.

This is after the Lovina Beach in Northern Bali had been a part of the ports-of-call for the Sail Indonesia yachting activity for the past three consecutive years. This is done by those who decide to have an extended visit to Indonesia.

In mid-October of this year, Yayasan Cinta Indonesia had been invited by Buleleng to operate Festival Lovina. This said festival is no ordinary one as it has received support from the Ministry of Tourism and the Creative Economy. The amount of Rp 100 million, or roughly US$10,500 from the said organization will be given the same amount by the Buleleng Regency’s budget.

The Sail Indonesia, an annual sailing rally, is now on its thirteenth year. It is during every middle of July when the rally begins in Darwin, Australia. It is the commencement of a three-month program that is composed of linked events in Indonesia. Today, his masterpiece has gone viral worldwide. The Summer the Surfer Girl was created in 1998 when an all-girls surf shop opened in Bali, courtesy of his friend and mentor, Steve Palmer.


Today, he is having his own exhibit entitled “Mysterioso” wherein he bases his artworks on his observations of life. He also likens art to surfing saying that it is a channel by which we can observe life. For him, surfing is a “time-out” zone that gives him the chance to detach himself from everyday life and evaluate life objectively.


‘‘There are always so many things happening in everyday street scenes, especially in Indonesia. Even if you do nothing, the energy inside you is always moving with the sights, sounds, characters and color,” he said.

Australians are helping Indonesians improve medical services

And with the 10th anniversary of the Bali bombing, Dr. Len Notaras, The head of Darwin's National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre, is visiting again the said hospital to have talks on additional trainings. With this training, an estimated 65,000 Australians are being treated every year at Bali’s Sanglah Hospital.

“For Australians travelling abroad, if there is an incident or an episode occurs while someone is away we can actually become involved much more quickly because we know the individuals up there,” said Dr. Notaras.

They were both soaked in a petal-filled bathtub in one of the Bali luxury villas in Ubud when they both decided to make their life in Australia infused with relaxation and rest.


''It's funny, some of our best ideas are actually hatched in a bathtub because when you're relaxed, you can just think,” said Naomi.


iKOU began five years ago as a brand for natural body, skincare, and homecare.


However, even as their products are for rest and relaxation, they cannot seem to anymore relax during much of the time now as their business has expanded and is attracting quite a number of corporate and retail customers proposing to them for their products.


The conceptualization of their brand did not happen overnight. In fact, it took them about 6 months to have their ingredients. They focused on natural ingredients like sandalwood and lemongrass.


Their very first “factory” was their own garage where Paul learned the art of making candles. On the other hand, it was in the kitchen where Naomi concocted her bath salts and other skincare regimen. They decided to create a website to promote and market their products. It was Paul who made it as he is a graphic designer and photographer. And in 2008, they launched their brand in a trade fair in Sydney.


Their efforts had paid off since the Australian Geographic ordered from them and wanted them to deliver in a week 1.5 tonnes of bath salt, 2000 candles and 2000 massage oils.

Sculpture exports on the rise

Bali has been known as a top tourist destination in the world especially with its Bali luxury villas and Bali villas resort. Only during the period of January to July 2012, a 31.03 percent increase had been experienced by Bali in the value of their sculpture exports. Compared to only US$36.49 million worth of sculpture exports during the same period last year, a whopping US$47.82 million was reached this year. 

It has been known from I Ketut Teneng, spokesperson for the Bali provincial government, that among the 17 handicrafts in Bali, it is the wooden souvenirs and sculptures which are considered a dominant commodity in the island.

"Commodities in these two categories accounted for 16.89 percent of the total value of Bali's exports, worth US$283.11 million,” he said.

These products are exported to the United States, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, as well as China.

“Those commodities occupy 16.89 percent of the total value of Bali's exports worth of US$283.11,” said I Ketut Teneng.

The artists and craftsmen of Bali have been inspired to make their products of better quality because of the positive response that the international market has given them. 

Ketut also added that fluctuations in the figures of the sculpture exports were due to the financial crisis being experienced by the world over. 

This is good news for all Balinese as this sculpture exports will definitely add to their being a tourist destination apart from having beautiful Bali luxury villas.

Bali tourism gearing up to welcome the 2013 APEC Summit

This coming November 2013, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit will kick off in Indonesia. This is the reason why the tourism stakeholders are preparing for the arrival of guests and participants.

Aussie PM Julia Gillard travel to Bali for the 10th anniversary

Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia, will be visiting Bali in October to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the bombings in Bali.


Both Bali and Canberra will be having services on October 12. Meanwhile, Governor-General Quentin Bryce will be leading the services in the capital of Australia. In Canberra, it will be held in the Great Hall of Parliament House while in Bali, it will be held in Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

"It was a moment of horror that had a profound effect on Australia as a nation and on the lives of survivors and the family and loved ones of those who died. Time has healed many of the physical wounds caused by the bombings but it can never diminish the sense of wrong we feel at this act of terror. Forgetting would be the ultimate injustice - and we will never forget,” said Gillard.

In an effort to allow the families of the victims of the bombings to attend either service, the Australian government promises to provide the financial assistance that they will need.

Of the 202 that died in the bombings, 88 were Australians.

For just pocket change, Australian grandparents Ernie and Hilda Ross have been able to book a week's accommodation in Bali.

Thanks to a too-good-to-be true offer from Webjet, a licensed Travel Agent public company, the Ausssie couple, both aged 74, couldn't believe their incredible stroke of luck when their son was able to scour Webjet and discovered a Bali hotel that offers a rate of just eight cents (NZ10c) per night.

Instead of missing their granddaughter's wedding in October because of their inability to afford the trip overseas, the Rosses were amazed when a salesperson from Webjet had called the couple, confirming that the company would honor the incorrect price.

Mrs. Ross narrated, "When the man told me I said 'that's impossible, they have made a mistake', the man said he was almost 100 percent sure that he could get it honoured. He was laughing and he didn't want to stop talking because he was so excited. Then I asked if breakfast was included and he laughed that much, like I had said something funny."

Thanks to the error, a full week's accommodation in Bali worth just 56 cents (NZ72c) is now waiting for the Rosses. And the best thing about this is they will now also be able to see their granddaughter getting married.

Mrs. Ross said, “We wouldn't have been able to make it, we would have been the only ones missing at the wedding but everything just seemed to fall into place. It's a dream you would never even think about."

The impacts of the use of plastics to our environment cannot be denied. The damage it can cause to both the living and non-living organisms are widespread. That is why many provinces and countries today are raising drives to eliminate the use of such materials in the hope of also eliminating the risks it poses on human life.

Such is the same realization that Bali has. That is why its governor, Made Mangku Pastika, made a public announcement declaring its goal of making Bali completely plastic-free. In action to this, the Bali Regeneration Foundation, along with Carrefour Supermarkets, is taking steps towards putting an end to the use of plastic shopping bags in the province.

Shopping ways have been changed at the Carrefour Supermarkets. As shoppers go home with their purchases, they are given the option to use reusable cotton bags which are on sale at the supermarket. Otherwise, they can also purchase plastic bags or bring plastic bags that have been used during their past shopping sprees.

“On Bali, there are over 15 million plastic bags distributed daily. By stopping the use of plastic bags, Carrefour and Yayasan Regenerasi Bali will stop over 350,000 plastic bags per month from going into the environment. This will be a great benefit to both people’s health and the environment,” said Gerardus Gemuru, General Manager of Carrefour Bali.

This is an important move towards saving the beautiful island of Bali since it is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. If people do not support the project, much damage and risk may be posted on its sites like the Bali luxury villas, Bali villas resort, and private villas in Bali.
